dual at atom films has a 60 mb downloadable interactive version. lots of fun really. i suggest you watch it.
it has the same problem any interactive movie will though, after i watch it i go back and watch it again and choose each difrent option so i can see every single outcome of each scene. then the interactiveness is simply replaced by a "or he could do this... and that would happen" sort of thing.

if you had enough options so that there was loads combinations then you could end up watching the movie 20 times and still see something new each time. Imagine you love the movie and you have watched your fave combination 30 times but today you feel like taking the darker route, you can do that! Like any kind of movie, how good it would be would depend on the writing and the acting and what not. To say it would be **** simply becos its not a proper movie and its something new is silly.
What interests me is the idea that movie would be tailored to your personal tastes. Are you trusting of the man who claims to be from the government, or are you more reluctant to go with him? If each possibility yielded equally interesting and well written story developments i cant see why it would be a bad thing.
Think of talking to your mate the next day at school about the movie, asking each other if you took the money or not, what you did when the girl asked you to help her... it would bring a whole bunch of new interesting dicussion pionts to watching a film.

O.K., so it wouldn't be boring - but it wouldn't be a movie either - think about it. It would be a computer game, only more advanced than games as we know them now (which is inevitably going to be a reality in years to come).
Films are there to take the viewer on a journey, tell them a story and in many ways provide them with an escape from the pressures of human life. That is the purpose behind true cinema - to sit the audience down and tell them to WATCH.
A hybrid springing from the loins of movies and video games just wouldn't be possible because as soon as the audience start making their own decisions, the whole thing becomes nothing more than another video game.
when movies suddenly had sound they didnt stop being movies, my guess is that having interactive plots also wont stop them being movies either.
We've all seen interactive movies/games before. Take Space Ace and Dragons Lair (okay they were cartoons). These nice to look at but were very boring. At a certain point you would either move the joystick left or right, one direction you would get to the next cut scene, the wrong direction meant you died. But that was as far as the interaction got.
Then there was Voyeur (I think it was on the CDi) and Sewer Shark on the Sega Mega CD. Both boasted full motion video but neither was successful.
I don't think there will be a real merging of computer games and movies, previous attemps have proved that it can't really be done.
In time computer games will look more and more realistic but I don't think you would ever be able to call them movies.
To be honest both forms of entertainment should be kept well away from one another. Cross pollenation has produced some pretty awful things. Games based on films are never very good. And look at some of the films that have been made based on computer games: Mortal Kombat, Super Mario Brothers and Streetfighter. Nuff said.
To add to what belovedmonster said... DVDs are to a certain extent interactive. Just look at how many DVD films have alternative endings. I'm sure before too long we'll see a film that gives a choice of endings before you reach the end of the film. Although I'm not sure how that could be achieved without giving away the films ending though.

The movie had plot points that were voted on by the audience and the majority ruled and the movie would go in that direction.
It might be funny if they changed the movie based on the lowest vote instead of the highest, that way most people in the audience would be surprised by the ending because it wasn't the one they voted on.
I think it does promote self-indulgence and frankly the makers of the films are sellouts IF they tout this concept as a replacement to conventional film screenings, as some have.
It's an OK gimmick I might want to partake in at most once a decade, unless it involves Jennifer Lopez's wardrobe. [img]tongue.gif[/img]
games can't replace movies, simply because the 'hardcore game players' out there refuse to play a 'game' which plays as a movie. If you want to play a movie you might as well just go see one.
That was the major complaint of the latter final fantasy games. You were playing a movie. Not a game.
The experience you get from gaming is entirely different than what you get from a movie. If I want to play a game I want to play something which plays really well, or against my friends or something. I don't want to play a ******* story. Most of them are all linear anyways.
There's a chance probably that a new product will rise, a mix between games and movies. But it's neither a movie or a game. One can't replace the other.
just reading hrough interactive movie etc, what about games such as Metal Gear solid and going back a few years Blade Runner on the PC, both those games were very cinematic, The story and play in Metal gear solid is unbelivable,
also Black hawk down confuses me as a film, all that reminds me off it playing one of the delta force games.

It completely opposes the point of filmaking. When a director is visualising a film from the screenplay the storyline is obviously the backbone of everything; therefore the directors' role becomes pretty pointless. A movie is telling a story, creating characters and taking them on a journey- YOU shouldn't get to make their decisions, else it becomes a boring exercise sort of like cheesy gameshow audience participation... what you are really describing as a great idea already exists with computer games!
That is why it is ultimately pointless- computer games are interactive, you make the choices, you do the work... film is a different forum where the story is told before your eyes. Please- why, WHY try to mix them??? There's no point! I can't understand that people that claim to want to make movies think this would be a good way of making movies? Writing a script for an interactive movie must be a pretty depressing exercise.
